ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Petersburg is running city shuttles this week so World Series fans can leave the car downtown and ride to Tropicana Field. City leaders expect tens of thousands of visitors to pour into the downtown core for the Rays home games against Milwaukee, and the shuttle loop is meant to keep them moving.
The money math favors the shuttle. City officials put downtown parking at about $25, while a spot at the Trop for the Series averages $150. The shuttles run between the stadium area and downtown St. Pete and back, so a fan can park several blocks away and still reach the gates without fighting stadium lot traffic.
Game 3 was set for 8 p.m. Monday, Game 4 follows Tuesday night, and a Game 5, if needed, would be played Wednesday night at the Trop. The city has posted a parking and traffic guide for the Series on its website, and drivers who live or work downtown should plan for heavier evening traffic on each game night.
Visitors with hours to kill before first pitch have plenty close by. Central Avenue is lined with independent shops, breweries, cafes and colorful murals. The St. Pete Pier offers a waterfront stroll with views across Tampa Bay, and the Dali Museum, home to a large Salvador Dali collection, is only minutes from the stadium by car.
For a crowd that wants to watch together, Ferg’s near the stadium started out as a Sunoco station in 1992 and has grown into a sports bar with more than 100 TVs that can hold up to 3,000 people. Across the bay, Ybor City is home to Columbia Restaurant, which traces its history to 1905 and is billed as the oldest restaurant still operating in Florida.
