The Detroit Tigers in action at Comerica Park, facing challenges against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Detroit Tigers experienced a tough loss against the Tampa Bay Rays, falling 14-8 at Comerica Park. Right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty struggled significantly, allowing eight earned runs in just 2.1 innings. Although Riley Greene showcased his talent with two home runs, the team’s reliance on multiple relievers ultimately undermined their efforts. Manager AJ Hinch emphasized the need for Flaherty to regain his command as the Tigers hope to stabilize their pitching rotation and push for postseason contention in the second half of the season.
Detroit – The Detroit Tigers suffered a significant setback on Friday night with a 14-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Comerica Park. The defeat marked a challenging outing for right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty, who struggled to find his rhythm and only lasted 2.1 innings on the mound.
In his short appearance, Flaherty gave up six hits, allowed eight earned runs, and issued three walks. This performance came on the heels of another disappointing start against the Cincinnati Reds, where he surrendered seven hits and seven runs. As a result, Flaherty’s earned run average (ERA) soared from 3.41 to 4.83 following these two challenging outings.
Compounding the difficulties for Flaherty is the situation surrounding his player option for the next season. With Friday night’s game marking his 15th start of the season, the player option escalates from $10 million to $20 million, putting further pressure on Flaherty to perform as he contemplates opting out of his current deal in pursuit of a longer-term contract.
The Tigers are counting on Flaherty to return to form in the latter half of the season to meet their postseason aspirations. However, during the game against the Rays, his command was notably lacking, and his inability to execute pitches resulted in too many hard-hit balls. Statistically, Flaherty faced 10 balls in play, with an average exit velocity of 99.5 mph against him.
Things got off to a rocky start for the Tigers when Rays’ Yandy Díaz hit a leadoff home run in the first inning, contributing to an early 4-0 deficit for Detroit. The Tigers attempted to rally when outfielder Riley Greene hit a three-run homer in the third inning, narrowing the Rays’ lead to just one run. Greene’s performance was a highlight for the Tigers; he finished with two home runs and four runs batted in (RBIs), bringing his season total to 17 home runs.
Despite Greene’s efforts, the Tigers struggled to overcome the deficit. They had to rely on four different relievers during the game, which placed additional strain on their bullpen after they had played a double-header the previous day. Colt Keith added to the offense with a two-run homer in the ninth inning, but it was not enough to change the outcome of the game.
The Tigers currently sit at 48-29 for the season, but their immediate focus will be on Flaherty as they aim to stabilize their pitching rotation. Manager AJ Hinch acknowledged the need for better execution from Flaherty and emphasized the importance of pitching counts in determining success on the mound.
With the Tigers set to face off against the Rays again, Sawyer Gipson-Long is scheduled to start on Saturday, followed by Casey Mize on Sunday. The team is hoping these changes can rejuvenate their performance as they push for a strong second half of the season and aim for postseason contention.
