Law enforcement discussing road safety at an intersection in St. Petersburg

News Summary

The St. Petersburg Police Department has collaborated with the Florida Department of Transportation to launch the Enhanced Law Enforcement Engagement (ELEE) program. This initiative aims to improve road safety in high-risk areas from June 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026, focusing on safe driving practices. Key issues addressed include speeding, DUI, and distracted driving. The program seeks to raise public awareness and implement educational presentations in schools while ensuring law enforcement is more present on targeted roadways.

St. Petersburg – The St. Petersburg Police Department (SPPD) has initiated a collaboration with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Seven to launch the Enhanced Law Enforcement Engagement (ELEE) program, aimed at improving road safety in high-risk areas. The program officially began on June 1, 2025, and is expected to run until February 28, 2026, focusing on elevating public awareness about safe driving practices.

The ELEE program seeks to enhance the presence of law enforcement on state roadways that have shown high crash rates. A significant part of the initiative includes first responders conducting educational presentations, particularly in Driver Education classes within schools situated in District Seven. The initiative places a strong emphasis on safety, targeting specific areas of concern identified in the State Highway Strategic Safety Plan (SHSSP).

Key issues being addressed through the ELEE program include intersection violations, driving under the influence (DUI), speeding, aggressive driving, distracted driving, work zone violations, and Move Over violations. These focus areas have been selected to combat prevalent issues such as speeding, running red lights, and using cell phones while driving.

The FDOT District Seven has expressed its commitment to enhancing road safety by fostering partnerships with local first responders. This collaborative approach aligns with FDOT’s broader vision of achieving zero fatal crashes and serious injuries on roadways. The ELEE program builds upon previous efforts, including a pilot initiative in 2022 that successfully engaged local agencies in reducing traffic casualties on state roads and federal highways under FDOT’s jurisdiction.

Roads affected by the program include major routes in St. Petersburg, such as Gandy Blvd., Roosevelt Blvd., 4th Street, and the Pinellas Bayway. These corridors were identified as areas with increased traffic incidents, thus necessitating targeted law enforcement action.

The program aims not merely to enforce traffic laws but also to educate the community on the importance of safe driving. With the rising concern over road safety in St. Petersburg, the SPPD has reinforced its commitment to being actively present on the roads, employing various methods to enhance safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

The launch of the ELEE program is part of a larger strategic effort by local law enforcement agencies, deputies, and state troopers to focus on regions with a high incidence of crashes. This proactive stance in road safety is intended to cultivate a safer driving environment for all residents and visitors in St. Petersburg.

As the program unfolds, it is expected to play a pivotal role in reshaping driving behaviors and reducing the occurrence of traffic-related incidents within the city. By collaborating with educational institutions and focusing on outreach, the SPPD and FDOT District Seven are determined to make St. Petersburg’s roads safer for everyone.
