St. Petersburg, Florida – An investigation into the murder of 49-year-old Timothy Pustelak has led to the arrest of 31-year-old Jovante D. Darling, who is charged with second-degree murder. Pustelak was found dead in his apartment on April 1, with multiple stab wounds. His death was reported after his girlfriend requested a welfare check when she could not reach him while away from home.

Police arrested Darling on April 9, just eight days after the incident. Forensic analysis revealed a bloody handprint on a wall in Pustelak’s bedroom, which was matched to Darling using the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Two latent print examiners confirmed the handprint belonged to Darling, who has a significant criminal history.

Darling faces serious charges, classified under Florida law as second-degree murder, which pertains to an unpremeditated killing carried out with a “depraved mind.” The relationship between Pustelak and Darling appears to have involved prior acquaintance, as police indicated the pair had an argument before the fatal incident occurred. However, the exact motive for the stabbing remains unclear.

Timothy Pustelak had recently relocated to Florida from Erie, Pennsylvania, with hopes of starting anew. He began work as the director of sales at redbox+Dumpsters Suncoast in March 2023. Before this role, Pustelak held positions at Pustelak Masonry and served as vice president at Spiral Stairs of America from 2019 until May 2022. Family members remember him as a devoted father to three children, who sought the sunny climate and ocean views of Florida for a fresh start.

As the case unfolds, Darling is currently held in the Pinellas County Jail without the possibility of bond. He had a hearing on April 10 to appoint a public defender, signaling the start of his legal process following the shocking event.

Background Context

The tragic death of Timothy Pustelak has impacted the Erie community significantly, with many reminiscing about his contributions to both his professional and personal circles. The circumstances surrounding his death, particularly the evidence leading to Darling’s arrest, underline the seriousness of violent crime and its far-reaching effects on families and communities. The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover any additional details that may shed light on the incident.

The funeral for Pustelak took place at the Edder Funeral Home in Girard, Pennsylvania, allowing family and friends to pay their respects and honor his memory. As this case progresses through the legal system, the focus remains on attaining justice for Pustelak and understanding the events that led to his untimely death.
