St. Petersburg community members are mourning the loss of Michael Dema, the city’s managing assistant city attorney, who passed away on June 13, 2023, at the age of 45. Dema’s unexpected death has left friends, colleagues, and local officials reflecting on his significant contributions to St. Petersburg and expressing their grief over the loss of a dedicated public servant.

Born on May 6, 1980, in St. Petersburg, Dema’s early life was characterized by his intellect and personable nature. He graduated from St. Petersburg High School, where he was well-respected among both peers and faculty. He continued to excel academically, earning a Master’s degree in environmental science from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Dema later returned to his hometown to pursue a career in law, graduating from Stetson University College of Law. He passed the Florida Bar exam in 2011, officially beginning his legal career in the very community that raised him.

Throughout his career with the City of St. Petersburg, Dema specialized in land use and environmental issues. He played a crucial role in advancing several significant pieces of legislation, including the 2021 Urban Agriculture Act and the 2025 No Wake Zone Bill. His dedication to environmental conservation was evident, particularly in his endeavor to establish a seagrass conservation area along St. Petersburg’s downtown waterfront. This project spanned over a decade and underscored his commitment to environmental sustainability and the health of the local ecosystem.

Local officials and friends have expressed their sorrow over Dema’s passing, citing his remarkable contributions and the lasting legacy he leaves behind. Councilmember Brandi Gabbard recognized Dema as a valuable public servant, noting his positive impact on the city. Councilmember Lisset Hanewicz praised him for his intelligence, empathy, sense of humor, and ability to simplify complex legal concepts for the public and fellow officials. His reputation among colleagues was that of a respected figure who combined knowledge with a personal touch, making him approachable and relatable.

Former Councilmember Ed Montanari spoke highly of Dema’s exceptional work ethic, while Councilmember Gina Driscoll lauded him as a “legend” in St. Petersburg. These sentiments were echoed by Councilmember Deborah Figgs-Sanders, who remembered Dema for his extensive knowledge and willingness to support others. Councilmember Robert Blackmon highlighted Dema’s kindness and approachability, qualities that endeared him to many.

Beyond his professional life, Dema was known for his love of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and classic rock music, interests that endeared him to those who knew him well. Classmate Scott Bitterli expressed hope that future city leaders would honor Dema’s legacy by continuing to advocate for the important issues he championed throughout his career, particularly environmental matters important to the community.

In recognition of Dema’s impact, there are increasing calls from local officials to establish a meaningful tribute in his honor, such as naming the proposed seagrass restoration area after him. This dedication would serve as a lasting reminder of his passion for environmental advocacy and his contributions to the community.

Although the cause of Dema’s death remains undisclosed, the city of St. Petersburg, alongside Mayor Ken Welch and other city officials, has expressed heartfelt condolences to Dema’s family and friends, emphasizing the profound loss of a leader who was not only a colleague but also a valued friend. The community of St. Petersburg continues to come together in remembrance of a man who dedicated his life to serving others and protecting the environment.
