Empty Airport Terminal Due to Flight Cancellations

News Summary

Silver Airways has announced that it will cease all flight operations effective June 11, following a Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. Originally filing for bankruptcy protection, the airline was unable to secure necessary funding to continue its operations and has canceled over 1,500 planned flights. Passengers are advised not to go to airports and to seek refunds for any purchases. This marks the end of Silver Airways, though its subsidiary will continue operations in the Caribbean region.

Florida – Silver Airways has announced that it will cease all flight operations effective June 11, 2025, following a nearly five-month-long Chapter 11 bankruptcy process. The airline had originally filed for bankruptcy protection on December 30, 2024, with hopes of restructuring its finances and securing additional capital to restore its operations.

Despite these efforts, Silver Airways was unable to secure the necessary funding to continue operations. The airline attempted to sell its assets to another airline holding company, but that company decided against continuing service in Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean regions where Silver operated.

Passengers are advised not to go to airports as operations have halted. Those who made credit card purchases are encouraged to seek refunds through their credit card companies or travel agencies, according to a social media announcement from Silver.

Operational Impact

In June 2025, Silver had planned to operate over 1,500 flights, which are now cancelled due to the shutdown. The airline’s operational capacity had significantly diminished during its bankruptcy proceedings, with only eight ATR turboprop planes remaining in its fleet. Additionally, the workforce was reduced from 608 employees to 348 in attempts to cut costs.

Financial Overview

At the time of filing for bankruptcy, Silver Airways reported $90 million in assets contra substantial debts amounting to $400 million in secured debt. The airline also faced obligations, including $8 million owed in taxes and $27.7 million due to unsecured creditors.

Silver Airways struggled with persistent financial difficulties worsened by months of negative cash flow, suffering losses of $467,000 in February and $1.22 million in the first two weeks of March 2025. These financial strains contributed to the airline’s inability to recover from bankruptcy.

Background Information

Founded in 2011, Silver Airways was primarily based in Florida and catered to several Caribbean destinations, including Nassau, Bimini, St. Kitts, and St. Maarten. The airline’s headquarters were located in the Fort Lauderdale area, and it quickly became a key player in regional air travel.

The shutdown of Silver Airways marks the end of a nearly 14-year timeline for the company. However, its subsidiary, Seaborne Virgin Islands, will still operate in the Caribbean despite the cessation of Silver’s activities.

The end of Silver Airways signifies a notable shift in the regional airline landscape, as many passengers will be left seeking alternative travel options in Florida and the Caribbean following this closure.
