After retiring from the military in 2018, Velazquez was inspired to open The Study by a similar pour-your-own wine bar he had visited in Napa Valley. Following this inspiration, he completed an apprenticeship with a fellow bar owner to gain insights into the industry and later obtained a business degree after moving to Pinellas County, where his parents had relocated two decades prior.
The journey to opening The Study was not without challenges. Velazquez faced significant obstacles due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced one bar he sought mentorship from to close permanently just before he opened. Despite these hurdles, The Study has carved a niche for itself, becoming a popular destination for both wine enthusiasts and bourbon drinkers. The bar has also enriched its offerings with unique experiences, such as the option to smoke bourbons with various flavors, further enhancing the tasting experience for patrons.
