The Polish American Society in St. Petersburg has reopened its venue after extensive repairs following damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The restoration cost over $100,000 and involved community support. The venue celebrated its reopening with a successful Dingus Day event, welcoming visitors with plans for continued operations and special events throughout the year.
St. Petersburg – The Polish American Society of St. Petersburg has triumphantly reopened its venue six months after sustaining extensive damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The venue, located at 1343 Beach Drive SE, began operations in 1957 and is a cherished gathering spot for the community.
Despite the damage being relatively concealed from casual observers, the restoration efforts required over $100,000, largely funded through community donations. The organization managed to raise approximately $92,000 with contributions from 130 club members and local supporters, as ongoing donations are still being collected online to meet the overall restoration goal of $150,000.
The most significant destruction occurred when Hurricane Helene made landfall at the end of September. A storm surge caused the hall to flood with half a foot of water, leading to substantial damage beneath the original Canadian maple wood floating dance floor. Thousands of gallons of water pooled under the floor, resulting in warping and buckling. Community efforts played a pivotal role in the recovery process as members and nearby residents utilized shop vacs and removed floorboards to eliminate the water.
Over three months, the dance floor’s wood was air-dried with the aid of fans, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners to restore its structure. Severely damaged sections of the floor were replaced with original wood sourced from the attic. Concurrently, the venue’s roof sustained damage that was exacerbated by Hurricane Milton, which struck shortly after Helene. Basic essentials such as the kitchen’s refrigerator and air conditioning units had to be replaced due to this hurricane damage, and rusted furniture was also refurbished through sanding and repainting efforts.
The Polish American Society proudly reopened its doors to the public on March 23, marking the occasion with a successful Dingus Day celebration that attracted an unprecedented crowd of approximately 220 visitors. Currently, the venue maintains limited operations, welcoming patrons every Thursday, along with special events scheduled throughout the summer and fall. Full daily access is anticipated to resume in November.
While the Polish American Society primarily serves those of Polish heritage, the organization extends a warm invitation to the wider community to partake in its offerings. The venue is also available for rental and community events, solidifying its role as a multicultural gathering place.
In reflecting on the organization’s journey through the restoration process, the resilience of the community has been highlighted as a crucial element of recovery. The venue stands as a valuable “precious gem” within the neighborhood, symbolizing not only the spirit of those who fought to restore it but also the importance of local community ties during times of hardship.
