Clearwater, Florida – On Memorial Day, the community gathered to honor fallen heroes at Bay Pines National Cemetery, where memories of service and sacrifice were brought to light. Among the honored was Marine Sgt. Anthony Muhlstadt, whose mother, Tanya Mort, described him as a kind and loving patriot. With a lifelong desire to serve in the military, he had dreamed of enlisting since the age of five. Unfortunately, he died by suicide in 2021, leaving behind a mother who has made it a point to visit his grave regularly, a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by veterans.

In a collective effort to honor veterans who may not have visitors, volunteers from the Travis Manion Foundation, known as “Spartans,” placed plaques and flowers at the graves of unvisited veterans. This organization aims to support not only veterans but also their families, fostering a sense of community and remembrance of those who have served. Tanya Mort emphasized the necessity of remembering fallen soldiers, underlining the importance of saying their names and keeping their memories alive.

Retired Marine Jeff Cole spoke to the foundation’s guiding principle, “If not me, then who?”, particularly in reference to families of Gold Star veterans who have lost loved ones in combat. This sentiment resonated throughout the day as volunteers worked tirelessly to place markers and flowers, recognizing those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Hundreds attended the 21st Annual Clearwater Honor Fest at the Florida Veterans Memorial Plaza, showcasing a united front in paying tribute to the fallen. Juliana Boor, Director at the St. Pete VA regional VBA office, emphasized the significance of Memorial Day as a time for reflection and appreciation for those who sacrificed their lives for freedom. Similarly, Major General Steven M. Marks acknowledged the bravery and commitment of those who have died in service to the nation.

Military couple Gwen and Rick McCool, reflecting on their own service, expressed their deep love for the country and highlighted the sacrifices made by themselves and their fellow veterans. The emotional toll of losing a loved one in service was palpable, as voiced by Evelyn Brady, a Gold Star mother who lost her son in a 2019 terrorist attack. She shared insights into the ongoing grief experienced by families who have lost members in the line of duty.

As part of the day’s observances at Bay Pines National Cemetery, wreaths were placed in honor of seven Gold Star families, symbolizing the community’s dedication to remembering the fallen. Lenny Collazo, a retired Army veteran, participated in laying flowers at random graves, emphasizing the utmost respect for those who served.

In 2022, volunteers paid tribute in a major way by placing 28,000 flags at headstones in the cemetery, an effort driven by community members determined to ensure that each veteran was honored. This dedication became especially crucial after the flag placement in 2021 saw over a thousand headstones without flags, leading to a community response to make improvements the following year. Doug Maddox, director of Bay Pines National Cemetery, recognized the vital role that community support played in organizing these events and commended the many individuals who volunteered their time.

The flags utilized during the Memorial Day observance were generously donated by the nonprofit organization, Flags For Fallen Vets, ensuring a dignified acknowledgment of all graves present in the cemetery. For those looking to continue honoring the legacy of veterans, the next volunteer opportunity at Bay Pines National Cemetery is set for June 4, offering the chance to assist in collecting flags from headstones.
