News Summary

The historic Manhattan Casino in St. Petersburg, Florida, is scheduled for a transformative $5 million renovation. Originally a hub of entertainment since its construction in 1926, the casino will be restored to accommodate up to 500 guests for various events. The city aims to preserve its architectural beauty and cultural significance while investing in the local economy. The renovation will feature modern amenities while honoring its historical roots, with state funding helping to facilitate preservation efforts. Completion is anticipated by spring 2026.

St. Petersburg, Florida is set to undergo an exciting transformation as the historic Manhattan Casino prepares for a significant $5 million renovation. Renowned for hosting legendary performers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, and James Brown, this cultural venue has deep roots within the community. Following a number of unsuccessful revival efforts, the casino has remained vacant since November 2022.

The City of St. Petersburg plans to invest $5 million in renovations aimed at restoring the building’s architectural beauty while reclaiming its cultural significance. The renovation project is expected to breathe new life into the space, transforming it into an event venue capable of accommodating up to 500 guests.

Members of the South St. Pete community have shared personal stories tied to the Manhattan Casino. For many, the casino is not just a building but a symbol of cherished memories. For instance, one resident recounted how their grandparents met at a Little Richard concert in the 1960s at the venue.

St. Pete City Councilman Corey Givens expressed optimism about the renovations. He believes that investing in the Manhattan Casino will stimulate the local economy and revitalize the area. Plans have been submitted to reimagine the casino as a rental venue and entertainment hub that incorporates modern amenities while preserving its historical character.

Renderings for the project indicate a flexible, multifunctional space designed to host weddings and community events. Construction is expected to include vital updates, such as improvements to the HVAC systems and the expansion of event spaces. The first floor will feature over 2,200 square feet of event space, while the second floor will boast over 4,100 square feet, both designed to maintain the venue’s historical aspects.

The renovation received a boost when state legislators awarded $1 million towards historic preservation efforts for the casino. This funding underscores the project’s commitment to preserving significant landmarks and Black cultural history. Councilmember Deborah Figgs-Sanders emphasized the importance of ensuring that this city-operated venue remains affordable and accessible to the community.

The Manhattan Casino was originally constructed in 1926 by pioneering Black developer Elder Jordan and became an epicenter of entertainment within the Deuces, a historic business district. Unfortunately, the casino closed its doors in 1968 and the surrounding area faced decline in the aftermath of desegregation.

In 2011, the city collaborated with local organizations to rejuvenate the venue, but challenges persisted. Following the expiration of a lease with previous operators in November 2022, Mayor Ken Welch’s administration shifted focus toward the casino’s future.

The renovation project is managed by the Ajax Building Company, with construction slated to commence later this year, and potential bookings for the new event space expected to begin in the fall of 2024. Once completed, the updated venue is anticipated to host a variety of events, fostering unity within the community while honoring the historical significance of the Manhattan Casino.

Set for completion by spring 2026, the renovation of the Manhattan Casino symbolizes a crucial effort to preserve and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of St. Petersburg’s African American community, and it aims to restore the venue’s role as a beacon of entertainment and cultural expression.
