Children enjoying free summer meals at a school in Bay Area

News Summary

During the summer break, various school programs in the Bay Area are offering free meals to ensure that no child goes hungry. Initiatives across multiple counties, including Hillsborough, Citrus, Hernando, Polk, Pasco, and Manatee, provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks for children aged 18 and under. With over 3,000 distribution points, families can easily access nourishing meals while engaging in summer activities. This essential program addresses food insecurity and supports children’s health during a critical time when school meals are unavailable.

Bay Area, California – Students throughout the Bay Area have an opportunity to enjoy free meals during their summer break via various school programs, ensuring that no child goes hungry while school is out. This initiative serves children 18 years of age and younger, providing them with essential nutrition while they engage in summer activities.

Hillsborough County is leading the effort by offering free breakfast and lunch at 166 participating schools. The St. Petersburg summer food program, available until August 8, provides free meals at various locations, with the exception of June 19 and July 4 when meals will not be served. Citrus County Schools are also on board, serving free meals at designated Open Sites for all children aged 18 and under throughout June and July, further enhancing access to nutritious food this summer.

In Hernando County, a specific summer feeding program has been established featuring pickup sites in Brooksville and Weeki Wachee. This program operates every Wednesday from June 11, 2025, to July 30, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Although registration is requested, families can rely on this resource to support their children during the summer months.

Polk County offers an expansive approach to summer nutrition, providing free breakfasts, lunches, and snacks to kids without requiring identification or applications. Collaborating with local schools, churches, and non-profits, the county manages over 20 distribution locations in Lakeland and about 100 throughout Polk County, making it easy for families to access meals without hassle.

Moreover, in Pasco County and Manatee County, as well as across the state, Summer BreakSpot sites are operational, serving free meals to kids and teens every weekday during the summer break. With more than 3,000 meal distribution points—including churches, schools, and libraries—access to meals is made straightforward and widely available.

Individuals seeking additional assistance or more information about meal sites can easily access help by calling 2-1-1 or 850-617-7170. Online maps are also provided for families to locate the meal sites in their areas, ensuring they can find nourishment for their children during this period.

This initiative to provide free summer meals is crucial, as many families depend on school meals as a primary food source. By enabling children access to nutritious options during the summer, schools are playing a significant role in mitigating food insecurity in the community.

Such programs not only foster a healthy community but also support families economically during the summer months when school breakfasts and lunches are not available. As these summer meal programs expand, they hold the promise of a healthier population well into the future.

As the summer extends, it is vital for families to remain informed about the available resources. With the collective effort from various counties to offer free summer meals, children in the Bay Area can continue receiving the nutrition they need to thrive.
