Florida's Economic Growth and Natural Beauty

News Summary

Florida has improved its standing in the latest U.S. News & World Report Best States rankings, moving from 9th to 6th overall. The state’s robust economy, driven by tourism and agriculture, contributed significantly to its rise, where it achieved the top spot in economic health. Although there was a decline in pre-K-12 education scores, Florida maintained strong performance in higher education. However, challenges remain concerning affordability and economic opportunity, impacting its overall ranking in this category.

Florida Ranks 6th Overall in 2025 U.S. News & World Report Best States Rankings

Florida has made significant strides in the recently released 2025 U.S. News & World Report Best States rankings, securing the 6th overall position, an improvement from 9th in 2024. This ranking evaluates 50 states based on factors such as crime, education, economic health, and healthcare. Topping the list were Utah, New Hampshire, and Idaho, ranked first, second, and third, respectively.

A major highlight for Florida is its performance in the economy category, where it clinched the number one ranking. This accomplishment is largely attributed to the state’s significant economic growth, which has been fueled by relatively lax regulations and an influx of new residents since the COVID-19 pandemic. The local economy benefits greatly from a thriving tourism sector, heavily influenced by Florida’s enticing beaches and major amusement parks located in cities like Orlando. Additionally, the agricultural sector plays a significant role, producing a substantial share of the country’s oranges while maintaining a robust year-round vegetable market.

Education Rankings and Performance

In the education sector, Florida slipped from its previous number one ranking in 2024 to second place amid declining scores in pre-K-12 education. However, Florida maintained its status as a leader in higher education, ranking 9th overall. The state boasts the second-highest rates of timely graduation for students enrolled in public two- and four-year degree programs. Moreover, Florida offers the lowest average in-state tuition and fees among public four-year institutions across the nation.

While Florida ranks average in terms of federal student loan debt for young adults and the number of residents aged 25 or older with at least an associate degree, its overall higher education performance continues to attract attention.

Other Rankings and Challenges

In addition to education and economic health, the 2025 Best States report also assessed factors such as fiscal stability, crime and corrections, and the natural environment. Governor Ron DeSantis has voiced satisfaction with Florida’s rise in the rankings, particularly highlighting achievements in economic success and higher education reforms.

Despite the high marks in various categories, Florida faced challenges in the opportunity category, ranking 47th. This indicates ongoing concerns about affordability, economic opportunity, and equality within the state. The state has been recognized for its labor policies, ranking fifth in pro-worker, pro-growth reforms, according to the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). ALEC praised Florida’s Universal Recognition laws that simplify the process for licensed workers relocating to the state.

Moreover, while Florida’s labor policies are designed to support upward mobility and attract businesses, the state must contend with persistent challenges, including significant union activism and regulatory pressures.

Safety and Aging in Place

In terms of safety, Melbourne, Florida, received recognition as the 9th safest city according to FBI crime data analyzed in the rankings. Interestingly, despite being a popular destination for retirees, Florida was ranked last in a study assessing the best states for aging in place. Factors contributing to this ranking include high housing costs and a notable shortage of home health aides.

As Florida continues to progress and address its challenges, it remains a leading destination within the United States, demonstrating notable economic growth, a strong educational framework, and an appealing environment for both residents and newcomers alike.
