Major Flight Disruptions Expected as U.S. Army Celebrates 250th Anniversary

Travelers flying out of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on June 14 should brace themselves for what could be significant delays. The occasion? A grand military parade and airshow marking the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday, which coincidentally falls on the same day as President Donald Trump’s birthday. This celebration is shaping up to be quite a spectacle, and while it will be a lovely sight to behold, it’s expected to create quite a stir at the airport.

Flight Disruptions Galore

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. and wrapping up with a dazzling fireworks display at 9:45 p.m., this celebration will come with some major operational challenges. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is stepping in to issue temporary flight restrictions for the Washington area during this time, meaning travelers should be prepared for a ground stop between 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. This is set to affect around 116 flights, leading to potential chaos among evening passengers.

During the prime time of the festivities, which will run from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the airport will be experiencing a surge in flight activity with 65 flights arriving and 39 flights departing. The airport is making accommodations for military flyovers along the parade route and the fireworks display.

Planning Ahead

With the FAA working closely with the Department of Defense to finalize a flyover plan, travelers will want to be extra vigilant. The FAA will also implement traffic management initiatives (TMIs) to ensure both safety and a prompt return to normal operations once the show is over.

But don’t fret if you’re booked for the day! Many airlines are stepping up with travel waivers and alternative solutions. For instance, United Airlines is providing a travel waiver for passengers at Reagan and even adding two extra departures at Washington Dulles International Airport as an alternative option. Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines is offering a fare-difference waiver for those needing to adjust their travel dates.

Southwest Airlines is experiencing a bit of a squeeze too, as it anticipates delays for about 20 scheduled flights, although they are not planning any cancellations. A travel waiver is also in place for their customers. On the flip side, Alaska Airlines has already canceled one flight to San Francisco and has rebooked it to Dulles, estimating delays of about one hour for its three flights during the celebration.

Prepare for Traffic Jams

Metro to reach the airport; this might help in avoiding the heavy congestion that is likely.

For those planning to celebrate in person, parking at the event will be extremely limited, and viewing of the fireworks from the airport is discouraged, as capacity will be tight. In addition, local restaurants and hospitality businesses may see a spike in activity, although they too could face issues with delayed deliveries and staff arrivals.

Stay Flexible!

6,600 soldiers, 150 military vehicles, and 50 helicopters, topped off with a concert at the Ellipse. However, travelers are reminded to stay flexible in their plans, as operational changes are likely to occur during this celebratory day. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has issued a caution, urging travelers to expect delays not just in the skies but also on the roads.

In short, June 14 is a day for remembering the service of the U.S. Army, but it’s also a day for travelers to be on guard. Happy travels, and enjoy the celebration!
