St. Petersburg – A 65-year-old woman, Delorse Boyd, has been charged with exploiting a disabled elderly woman, after reportedly stealing more than $200,000 from her over a span of four years. Boyd was arrested on January 13, 2025, following a warrant issued earlier that month. She faces a serious first-degree elderly exploitation charge, which is classified as a felony, and is currently being held on a $150,000 bond.
Investigations revealed that Boyd exploited the trust placed in her by a 79-year-old victim, who had initially hired Boyd for cleaning services. Boyd took on additional responsibilities after the victim underwent surgery, which included grocery shopping, managing bill payments, and picking up medications. Trusting their relationship, the elderly woman allowed Boyd to access her credit cards and checkbook.
During the time of the theft, which spanned from July 7, 2017, to September 1, 2021, Boyd wrote a staggering 176 checks that allowed her to withdraw cash, pay her personal bills, and deposit funds into her own bank account. Notably, one of the checks written by Boyd exceeded $3,500 and was used to cover her criminal and traffic offenses. Additionally, Boyd used the victim’s credit card to spend over $20,000 on various expenses, including appliances, utilities, ride-share services, online shopping, and travel expenses.
The financial misconduct came to light when the victim, who was wheelchair-bound, was already 83 years old at the time a suspicious activity report was filed with the bank. The investigation was conducted by the St. Petersburg Police Department, with details disclosed by authorities in Pinellas County.
This case underlines the need for increased awareness about potential financial exploitation of the elderly. Authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance within the community to protect vulnerable individuals from falling victim to similar schemes.
Financial exploitation of elderly individuals can take many forms and often occurs when a person in a position of trust takes advantage of their relationship. As seen in this case, the elderly victim, who had entrusted Boyd with her finances, suffered significant financial losses due to Boyd’s deceitful actions.
As Boyd’s case progresses through the legal system, it serves as a reminder that financial integrity and safeguarding the welfare of the elderly are critical concerns in today’s society.
