Eastern Florida State College President Dr. Jim Richey Honored as Person of the Year, Contract Extended to 2029

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Eastern Florida State College President Recognized as Person of the Year

In a move that highlights the impressive leadership of Dr. Jim Richey, the Eastern Florida State College (EFSC) Board of Trustees has decided to extend his contract until 2029. This decision was made unanimous by the five-member board, cementing Richey’s role as a vital asset to the college’s mission.

Chairman of the Board Ron Howse praised Richey, noting that his ability to listen to the community and local businesses leads to the creation of programs that significantly bolster the economy. “Because of that, we now have nursing programs, flight maintenance programs, and more,” Howse stated. “All these people are hired as soon as they graduate. That’s what it’s all about.”

Other board members echoed similar sentiments regarding Richey’s contributions and insights into EFSC’s future. Trustee Bruce Deardoff commended Richey, remarking, “The improvements he has made in curriculum and facilities is nothing short of amazing.” Trustee Winston Scott referred to Richey’s performance as “outstanding in all respects,” highlighting the college’s growth in all key metrics, including enrollment and diversity.

Trustee Laura Moody recognized Richey’s vision for higher education in Brevard County and stated, “We are truly fortunate to call him EFSC’s leader.” Trustee Dr. Edgar Figueroa concluded his evaluation with three words: “exceptional, genuine and irreplaceable.”

Commitment to the Future

In response to the board’s support, Richey expressed gratitude and shared his ambition to further elevate EFSC. “I am highly motivated to keep this college moving forward for many years to come,” he said. Richey emphasized the college’s unique environment, noting the dedicated team of professionals and the eager students who wish to enhance their career prospects through education. “The best part of this job is watching them graduate to the next exciting phase of their lives. It is my great joy to play a role in making that happen,” he added.

Achievements Under Dr. Richey’s Leadership

Richey’s recent performance review, which spanned 50 pages, highlighted numerous accomplishments at EFSC. These milestones include:

  • EFSC becoming a state college in 2013 and launching nearly 50 new programs over the past decade.
  • Investments made to modernize all four EFSC campuses, including new facilities for aerospace education and student housing.
  • Initiating two major technology building projects.
  • A successful reaccreditation process, leading to a positive report from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
  • Maintaining stable tuition rates for 12 consecutive years and awarding a record $1 million in student scholarships.
  • The launch of a dynamic new website that contributed to increased enrollment levels surpassing pre-pandemic figures.
  • Recognition among the top 150 community colleges in the nation by the Aspen Institute.

As the college moves forward, the emphasis on meeting the needs of the community remains a cornerstone of Richey’s vision. He seems determined to ensure that Eastern Florida State College not only continues its track record of success but also adapts to the evolving requirements of students and industries alike.
