Clearwater Man Arrested for DUI After Crashing into Police Cruiser

Clearwater Man Charged with DUI After Collision with Police Cruiser

In Clearwater, a serious incident unfolded late on Friday night when Jerry Sandefur Jr., a 45-year-old man, was charged with driving under the influence (DUI) following a collision with a police vehicle. The crash occurred around 11 p.m. on the Courtney Campbell Causeway as the police car was stationary and had its emergency lights activated.

The Incident

Reports indicate that the Clearwater police officer involved in the collision was transported to a local hospital. Fortunately, the officer was treated and later released. Meanwhile, Sandefur was also taken to a hospital following the crash and was subsequently transferred to the Pinellas County Jail.

Charges Against Sandefur

Sandefur is facing multiple charges including DUI with property damage, possession of marijuana, and violating probation. After his arrest, he admitted to consuming marijuana, alcohol, and pain medications prior to getting behind the wheel.

Chief Gandy’s Statement

Clearwater Police Chief Eric Gandy addressed the situation, pointing out the serious dangers posed by Sandefur’s reckless behavior. “This could have resulted in fatalities,” he stated, underscoring the life-threatening risks involved when drivers neglect safety measures. This incident is not isolated; there have been numerous similar accidents involving police vehicles on the Courtney Campbell Causeway in the past.

The Move-Over Law

Florida law requires that drivers must either safely change lanes or slow down for stopped emergency and law enforcement vehicles. Chief Gandy reiterated the significance of the move-over law, emphasizing its role in protecting the lives of officers and others on the road. The law is designed to prevent tragedies similar to the one involving Sandefur.

Public Awareness

This recent incident serves as a critical reminder for drivers to remain vigilant and obey traffic laws, especially when approaching emergency vehicles. A failure to do so not only endangers law enforcement personnel but also poses a serious risk to the broader community.

In conclusion, the incident involving Jerry Sandefur Jr. underscores the serious implications of driving under the influence and the importance of adhering to traffic laws aimed at safeguarding everyone on the road. The judicial process will now proceed to address the charges brought against Sandefur, but the case highlights an ongoing concern for public safety in Clearwater and beyond.
