Chicago has been named the bedbug capital of the United States for the fourth consecutive year, according to Orkin’s annual report detailing the top 50 U.S. cities plagued by bedbug infestations. The ranking is based on treatment data collected between December 1, 2022, and November 30, 2023, primarily focusing on areas where Orkin performed the most bedbug treatments. Following Chicago, New York ranks second and Philadelphia holds the third position on the list.
In addition to these major cities, several Florida cities also made the top 50. Tampa ranked at No. 31, marking a notable increase of ten spots compared to the previous year. Miami and Orlando secured the 45th and 46th positions, respectively, with Orlando experiencing a slight rise of one spot from the previous year.
Bedbugs, scientifically known as Cimex lectularius, are small hemovorous insects that primarily feed on the blood of humans and animals, mostly during nighttime. Adult bedbugs measure approximately 3/16 of an inch in length and can vary in color from red to dark brown. These pests are notorious for their ability to hide effectively and can travel distances upwards of 100 feet within a single night. However, they typically reside within 8 feet of their hosts’ sleeping areas.
Surprisingly resilient, bedbugs can survive without feeding for up to six to seven months and can persist in abandoned structures for a year or more. Female bedbugs are prolific reproducers, laying between 200 and 500 eggs throughout their lifespan. The consequences of bedbug bites include itching, insomnia, anxiety, and potential skin infections resulting from scratching the affected areas. Moreover, victims may not notice the bites until they develop into red, swollen welts, which can take anywhere from one to fourteen days to appear.
Signs that indicate bedbug presence may include bite marks similar to those caused by fleas or mosquitoes, often observable in a linear pattern. In light of their stealthy behavior, it is imperative for individuals to remain vigilant, especially in areas frequented by travelers, such as hotels and public transportation.
To mitigate the risk of introducing bedbugs into one’s home, experts recommend unpacking suitcases in non-sleeping areas after traveling. Vigilantly inspecting personal belongings for any signs of bedbugs is crucial. If any potential warning signs are detected, utilizing a professional pest control service is advisable. These experts are equipped to handle infestations and can offer effective solutions to eliminate these pests.
The rise of bedbug infestations in urban areas like Chicago highlights the importance of awareness and preventative measures. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and informed on how to recognize and mitigate bedbug risks in their environments. With the aggressive reproductive rates of these pests and their ability to endure long periods without feeding, effective pest control becomes essential in maintaining healthy living spaces.
