Modern AI traffic signals enhancing road safety in St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg has received approval for an artificial intelligence traffic signal project aimed at reducing congestion and enhancing road safety. The initiative will install fifteen smart traffic signals on major roads known for heavy traffic and frequent accidents. Upgraded traffic systems will utilize video detection technology for real-time management, prioritizing emergency vehicles and improving overall traffic flow. Funded by a $1.16 million grant, the project must be completed by year’s end, coinciding with an Enhanced Law Enforcement Engagement program to improve roadway safety.
St. Petersburg is set to improve its traffic conditions and road safety with the City Council’s recent approval of an artificial intelligence traffic signal project. The initiative will implement smart traffic signals along significant corridors that experience considerable congestion, specifically targeting areas where safety has been a concern due to frequent accidents.
The project will see the installation of fifteen smart traffic signals on two key roads: 66th Street from Pasadena Avenue to 38th Avenue North, and Tyrone Boulevard from 5th Avenue to Park Street. These routes are heavily trafficked, with around 40,000 vehicles passing through daily. Some intersections along these paths have been identified in local police reports as frequent sites of dangerous crashes.
Currently, the traffic signal systems in St. Petersburg utilize loop detection technology, which will be upgraded to more sophisticated video detection systems equipped with cameras. The implementation of AI traffic signals will allow for real-time traffic management, enabling traffic lights to adjust green light durations based on current vehicle densities. This aim is to decrease congestion and enhance the overall flow of traffic.
In addition to improving traffic flow for standard vehicles, the new system will prioritize emergency vehicles and buses. This will be achieved through sensors that can modify traffic signals, allowing for quicker response times and greater safety for emergency responders.
The total cost of the project is $1.16 million, funded by a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). To meet grant conditions, the city must complete the project by the end of the year. The city will initially pay for the installation, with FDOT providing reimbursement afterward. As part of this initiative, the City’s traffic management center will also receive an upgrade, including a new video wall to assist with monitoring and management.
In conjunction with the AI traffic signal project, the St. Petersburg Police Department has partnered with FDOT to launch a new program known as the Enhanced Law Enforcement Engagement (ELEE). This program is designed to heighten roadway safety and will run until late February. It will particularly focus on high-crash thoroughfares within the area.
The ELEE program will incorporate educational outreach efforts, with first responders engaging in discussions during Driver Education classes aimed at reducing unsafe driving behaviors. Specific areas of focus will include intersection violations and driving under the influence (DUI) as part of the State Highway Strategic Safety Plan (SHSSP).
FDOT has set a goal of zero fatal crashes and serious injuries on Florida roadways through cooperative measures between local agencies and law enforcement. The efforts being made through the AI traffic management initiative and the ELEE program are critical steps towards achieving these long-term safety objectives.
As St. Petersburg embarks on this project, residents can anticipate improved traffic conditions and a greater emphasis on safety in their daily travel experiences.
