COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State is preparing to play the rest of the season without starting quarterback Julian Sayin, who is out indefinitely after hurting his throwing arm in Saturday’s win over Indiana.
Coach Ryan Day said Tuesday the program will not set a timeline for Sayin’s recovery. The staff is building plans that assume he will be unavailable for both the remaining regular season and any postseason games. Day had said a day earlier that the injury would sideline Sayin for at least several weeks while testing continued.
Sayin went down on a sack late in the fourth quarter of the 19-15 victory over Indiana on Oct. 17, a result that snapped the Hoosiers’ 22-game winning streak. He left the field and later returned to the sideline with his arm in a sling, missing the final series.
The loss is a big one for the third-ranked Buckeyes, who sit 4-0 in the Big Ten and 6-1 overall. Sayin, a Heisman Trophy finalist a year ago, had started 21 games in a row. He has thrown for 2,007 yards, 19 touchdowns and four interceptions this fall while completing 68.2% of his passes.
True freshman Luke Fahey, a former three-star recruit who won the backup job over Tavien St. Clair before the season, is in line to take over. Fahey has completed 9 of 13 passes for 202 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in limited work.
Ohio State is off this week. The remaining schedule includes a trip to USC, home games with Oregon and Northwestern, a road game at Nebraska and the regular-season finale at home against Michigan.
