Council Lifts Parking Tickets and Permits in St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Fla. — St. Petersburg City Council finished a public hearing Thursday and approved higher parking citation rates plus pricier residential permits, a package members said should turn over scarce curb spaces downtown.

Expired-meter citations move from $17.50 to $32.50. Most other parking violations jump from $30 to $45. Downtown monthly permits go to $25. Annual residential permits rise from $15 to $30.

Council first advanced the fee changes on Oct. 1 and scheduled the Oct. 15 hearing. The Thursday tally was unanimous. Leaders argued stiffer penalties can push drivers to leave when paid time ends, especially on crowded corridors such as Central Avenue.

People who park near shops described looping the same blocks and sometimes skipping a stop when a space looks unlikely. A few said they already walk or ride scooters instead of feeding meters for short errands.

Supporters want the higher fines to free up more spaces for businesses that depend on short-term curb turnover along busy retail stretches.

Separately, council is again studying sidewalk delivery robots for cafe and restaurant strips after pausing that idea about two years ago. Transportation committee work continues on that track.

Unauthorized parking in permit neighborhoods can draw higher tickets under the same package, which supporters say may ease spillover when downtown events fill nearby streets. City staff will post the updated fine and permit chart for drivers who use downtown meters or live in residential permit zones.
