St. Petersburg, Florida – Dublin, Ohio

Patrick J. Dugan, a resident of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Dublin, Ohio, passed away peacefully at the age of 68, surrounded by his family. His death follows a courageous year-and-a-half battle with pancreatic cancer, during which he maintained a positive outlook and approached his illness with faith, dignity, and humor.

Dugan described his life as a charmed life and remained grateful for the experiences he had, despite the challenges brought by his health issues. He is remembered not only for his professional success but also for the values he embodied throughout his life.

Family and Early Life

Born to John and Irene Dugan, Patrick was influenced greatly by his family’s values and the example set by his four older brothers. He spent his childhood years working alongside his parents in the construction of a golf course on their farmhouse property, which instilled in him a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. The Sisters of Charity nuns who educated him enriched his character with lessons of love, empathy, and compassion.

He married his high school sweetheart, Susan, and they enjoyed 48 years of marriage, exemplifying a loving partnership. Together, they raised four children—Cathy, Anne, Karen, and Tom—who were the pride and joy of his life. Dugan celebrated each of his children’s achievements and cherished the values of integrity, kindness, and love they represented. His seven grandchildren also brought immense joy to his life, and he took great pleasure in being an active presence in their lives as “Papa.”

Education and Career

Patrick J. Dugan graduated from Bath High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA), graduating cum laude from Bowling Green State University. While at Bowling Green, he excelled in athletics as he captained the varsity golf team and competed in two NCAA Division I National Championships.

Continuing his education, Dugan attained a Juris Doctor (JD) degree with honors from The Ohio State University, where he was a member of the prestigious Order of the Coif. His legal career was distinguished, beginning as a longtime partner at Squire Patton Boggs, where he led the firm’s transactional division across over 40 offices in 20 countries. Dugan briefly served as Chief Legal Officer for Medical Mutual before rejoining Squire Patton Boggs.

His contributions to law were recognized with awards such as Crain’s Cleveland Business General Counsel of the Year in 2012 and inclusion in Best Lawyers in America from 2008 to 2023. In addition to his extensive career, he held board roles with The Centers for Families and Children and Ariel Corporation.

Passion for Golf and Community Engagement

Dugan’s love for golf continued throughout his life, and he was an active member of Wedgewood Golf & Country Club and The Vinoy Club, where he won several club championships. Known for his infectious smile and generous hugs, he had a natural ability to engage in meaningful conversations that made those around him feel valued. Reading was another passion he pursued throughout his life.
