Conceptual design of the new St. Petersburg port redevelopment showcasing modern infrastructure and greenspace.

News Summary

The Port of St. Petersburg is embarking on its first major redevelopment in 26 years, outlined in a new master plan. This comprehensive project will revitalize the port’s outdated facilities and surrounding landscape over the next decade, integrating community feedback and offering multiple redevelopment concepts focused on recreation, marine industry, and research. Local stakeholders are encouraged to participate in shaping the future of the port through surveys and polls.

St. Petersburg Set for Major Port Redevelopment

The Port of St. Petersburg is poised for significant redevelopment for the first time in 26 years, guided by a new master plan that will reshape both the port and its surrounding area. This ambitious effort is projected to take over a decade to complete and involves revitalizing the port’s aging multi-use facility along with 4.4 acres of adjacent land south of downtown.

Details of the Redevelopment

At a recent project open house, a city consultant unveiled three distinct concepts for the redevelopment. These concepts serve as potential blueprints rather than definitive plans, showcasing various uses the port could accommodate in the future. The proposed redevelopment will include new infrastructure, updated facilities, and the addition of greenspace that will extend into Bayboro Harbor. Each concept emphasizes different aspects of the port’s potential and serves as a foundational reference for further discussions.

Currently, the port features a 1,200-linear-foot wharf, two operational buildings, and a surface parking lot. One of these buildings is leased to the University of South Florida’s College of Nursing, while the other serves various needs, including hosting large yachts and a seasonal cruise line.

Community and Stakeholder Input

The Enterprise Facilities Manager, David Wirth, has identified that redeveloping the port may encounter challenges due to federal regulations and permitting processes. He has emphasized the importance of community feedback in shaping the redevelopment plans, with a survey currently open for public input until July 2. A follow-up community poll is scheduled for October to further refine the concepts based on the feedback received.

Exploring Redevelopment Concepts

The three unveiled concepts focus on different future uses for the port:

  • Concept 1 emphasizes recreational uses, aiming to enhance the waterfront experience.
  • Concept 2 centers on marine industrial activities and maintenance facilities. Although it is the most costly option, it promises high potential returns on investment.
  • Concept 3 seeks to expand research facilities and improve cruise operations while increasing park and green space. This concept is considered the least expensive and most “iconic.”

The planning process for the port’s redevelopment began with site tours and stakeholder meetings in January 2023. As the maritime consultancy firm Moffatt & Nichol completes the final master plan and reinvestment strategy, expected in December, they will refine these concepts further to align closely with community input and needs.

Next Steps and Timeline

Local leaders initially agreed to reassess the port’s future in January 2023. Through cooperation and ongoing dialogue with the community, the municipal team aims for constant year-long utilization of the facilities. This collaborative approach is viewed as vital to achieving a successful redevelopment outcome that benefits both the port and the local community it serves.

As this redevelopment project progresses, future updates will share advancements in the planning and construction phases, illustrating the collective effort to uplift the Port of St. Petersburg and integrate it further into the life of the city.
