Diverse crowd celebrating at St. Petersburg Pride Parade with rainbow flags

News Summary

St. Petersburg, Florida, is set to host one of the largest Pride celebrations in the nation, expecting over 500,000 participants. This year’s event marks the 10th anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. Enhanced security measures are in place to ensure the safety of attendees, including police patrols and the use of drones. The festivities will feature a Trans March, entertainment, food vendors, and additional community events, creating a vibrant atmosphere of celebration and unity for the LGBTQ+ community.

St. Petersburg, Florida, is gearing up for one of the largest Pride celebrations in the nation this weekend, with an anticipated turnout of over 500,000 attendees at the St. Pete Pride parade on Saturday. This year marks a significant milestone, as it coincides with the 10th anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage across the country.

In response to growing national safety concerns, the St. Petersburg police are implementing enhanced security measures for the event. The police department is working closely with federal agencies, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service, to ensure safety throughout the festivities. Officers will patrol the parade route both by land and water, utilize drones to monitor large crowds from above, and deploy undercover officers in the area.

St. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Holloway pointed out that previous incidents at similar events have prompted the department to increase security protocols. The comprehensive safety plan underscores the city’s commitment to providing a secure environment for participants and spectators alike.

A highlight of the weekend will be the Trans March, scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday. This march serves to showcase unity within the LGBTQ+ community, and it will be an integral part of the overall Pride festivities. The parade itself is set to kick off at 6 p.m., following celebrations that will commence earlier at around 2 p.m.

St. Pete Pride, whose president Dr. Byron Green-Calisch comments on the importance of community engagement and celebration, promises a vibrant atmosphere. The festival will run from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., featuring local entertainers, a variety of food options, and numerous vendors.

In addition to the main pride activities, there will be a separate event known as The People’s Pride at the Allendale United Methodist Church. This event aims to focus on community and grassroots celebration, providing an alternative for those looking to honor Pride in their own unique way.

As the weekend approaches, local officials have advised attendees to prepare for heavy traffic and potential road closures throughout the day. For those attending, parking will be available in downtown garages, and free shuttle services will operate via the SunRunner transit system and PSTA to alleviate congestion.

Participants are encouraged to stay hydrated, apply sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothing for the expected heat. The event is designed to foster inclusion and celebration, and the safety measures being put in place aim to ensure that everyone can enjoy the Pride festivities with peace of mind.

Following the parade, Sunday will see a Street Fair in the Grand Central District, which will feature additional performances and opportunities for community engagement. The weekend’s events promise to be a significant celebration of LGBTQ+ pride, resilience, and unity in St. Petersburg.
